A Project Tararua Initiative

About The Directory

Entries in this Directory are limited to those who can provide a social service to members of the community. Think health and well-being. Think families in crisis. Think opportunities for changing attitude or behaviour. Think where can I get help for my problem.

The Directory is organised by the situation you are in when you start looking. For example, if you are over 60, start with the Senior tab. If you are pregnant, start with the Pregnancy and Babies tab. If you find yourself under stress or in a crisis, start with the Times of Stress tab.

There is a General Information tab for everyone which contains such information as Libraries, Council Rubbish Dumps, Information Centres, local newsletters, and so on.

Although sporting activities are helpful in meeting social needs in a community, sporting organisations are not included as they can be found in many other places. However, a contact for Sport Manawatu is included in this Directory. Similarly with arts and craft activities which also contribute to a community's wellbeing, the listings are elsewhere but a local contact for Creative NZ is included in this Directory.

Services provided by Tararua District Council are included in this Directory even though their listings are also readily available on the council website. They have been listed by town or village to make them easier to find. Often one place to find help for what you need is better than having to search in many places.

Sources of rental accommodation are listed, as well as short-term accommodation suitable for families, such as self-contained cabins, rooms and units, and backpacker style accommodation. All local camping grounds are also listed as they provide an opportunity for family recreation. For members of the community in need of emergency accommodation Work and Income or a social worker or counsellor can assist.

The Tararua Community and Services Directory has a web presence only and is available to be linked to any other website. To link this directory to your website, please contact us.

Helping Our Community Thrive!

Communities serve the needs of individual people better when they are well connected. A measure of connectedness is the number of people whose Christian name you know in your community. If you know lots of people by name, your community is well-connected. A well connected community supports the individual members of that community and helps people to live happier and more satisfied lives.

Community Conversations were held in all towns in the district as part of Project Tararua. Local actions which strengthen the community were brought to light and discussed with members of the community. Most of these local projects continue to contribute to the resilience of their local communities. Information Champions in each town are conversant with their local projects and can be contacted through the directory for further information.

Project Tararua has been all about making communities more resilient and helping individuals lead happier and more satisfied lives in Tararua.
